Andrew's 30th Birthday Cake and Emma's 1st Birthday Cake

I got a phonecall from a friend of mine who wanted to get a cake for a mutual friend for their 30th birthday dinner. Originally, she wanted a poker table cake because he liked to play poker. I get a call a week later asking if she could change the cake. Apparently, his friends who were taking him to dinner had like 10 different ideas on what cake they wanted, which ranged from dunkin donuts coffee cup to a yankeees-related theme, to a butt cake. Long story short, she told me to use my imagination because they couldn't agree on a cake - which is NOT a good thing to tell me because I can get REALLY out of control. So I decided on a jambalaya-type cake. A random conjunction of all of the above.

The next day I had a cake order for a dohl party (1st birthday party). A week prior I received an email from someone who said she needed a cake for her daughter's 1st Birthday. She was originally planning on getting the cake from the caterer but heard from her friend about me (her friend went to a party that I made the cake for and thought my cakes were delish ^_^ ) She also felt unsure about getting a cake from a place she didn't know anything about. Anyways, long story short, she was pleasantly surprised that I was cheaper than the caterer and I guess she liked me - so she ordered the cake from me. Yay! We went back and forth with designs and styles and finally decided on a buttercup yellow cake with pink and light green butterflies and a ribbon on the bottom tier - to match her invitation. I was kind of nervous because she kept revising the sketch - and because she lived in a really wealthy part of Manhattan. She was VERY very nice but I imagined her to be really particular and with extremely high expectations. I spent all night decorating her cake with the butterflies she wanted. I hand-made each butterfly and placed them in each position she wanted. She also wanted the butterflies to leave a trail and I thought it's be pretty to make the trails out of colored pearls. (which I also hand rolled.

She lives by the West Side Highway - near the world trade center. The weather was crazy nice that day so of course everyone and their mother was out. Took me 2 HOURS to get there. I left my house at 11:30 AM and I got there by 1:30 PM. Then it took another hour and a half to get home. The whole trip to 3 1/2 hours. Craziness. When I delivered the cake, she wasn't there yet because she was still getting ready. Her husband loved the cake but I was anxious to know whether she liked it or not.. Later on that evening, I receive an email from her which gave me a sigh or relief.

"The cake was amazing and EVERYONE loved it. They all took a business card and I can't wait to get my 30th birthday cake (Sept) from you. I told my husband to get it from you. Thanks again for making it so memorable and tasty!! loved the cake and I saved the first tier for myself. I kept asking my nanny if you were there so we could meet, but I never got the phone call. Next time though!! And you made the cake exactly what I envisioned it to be and it came out even better. Thank you!"

By they way, I Loooooove getting feedback emails *hint*hint* ^_^

Golf Cake, Train Cake, Showers and more 1st Birthday Cakes...

I've been so busy busy busy that I haven't had time to update my blogs!

Here are some pictures of cakes I've been making the past couple of weeks..

40th Birthday Golf Lover Cake

Ethan's 2nd Birthday Train Cake

Leah's 1st Birthday Cake

Jen's Las Vegas Themed Bridal Shower Cake

Gary's 1st Birthday Monster Truck Cake

And a Present Box Bridal Shower Cake

What else has been going on?..

For starters, I'm listed as a vendor on www.1stKoreanBirthdays.com under the NJ/NY listing. And my cake pictures are posted under the vendor showcase page. But you have to set up an account (which is free of course) to see all the pages. It's a really good website for people who want to throw a 1st korean birthday (dohl parties) - it gives you places where you can get catered food, balloons, favors, venues, etc. Check it out!

I've also been asked to blog on www.KokoLiving.com for the children's and baby section. How exciting ^_^
